NKU softball earns split against No. 13 Indianapolis with 4-0 victory in nightcap

INDIANAPOLIS – The Northern Kentucky University softball team earned a split of its doubleheader with nationally ranked Indianapolis on Sunday by posting a 4-0 victory against the Greyhounds in the second game.

Ashley Gates was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs in the nightcap as NKU knocked off No. 13 Indianapolis. The Norse bounced back after suffering a 2-0 loss in nine innings in the first game.

Indianapolis' Jessica Breeden hit a two-run homer to give the Greyhounds the walk-off victory in the opener. Jennifer DeMotte struck out 16 NKU batters to earn the win for Indianapolis.

In the nightcap, Gates snapped a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with an RBI single that plated Mandi McQueen. NKU added three more runs in the top of the seventh as Gates, Emily Schwaeble and Kari Lang all had RBI hits.

Chelsie Roy scattered eight hits and collected the shutout for NKU, which is 23-12 overall, 13-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Roy struck out six batters and walked just one.

Indianapolis is 27-10-1 overall, 10-6 in the GLVC.

In the opener, NKU's April Ehlers struck out nine and allowed five hits. Ehlers now has 832 career strikeouts and is closing in on Krystal Lewallen (836 strikeouts) as NKU's all-time leader.

NKU concludes the road trip Monday with a GLVC doubleheader at Saint Joseph's.
