EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Northern Kentucky University's
Dave Middendorf scattered three hits and struck out seven batters as the Norse coasted to an 8-1 victory over 16th-ranked Southern Indiana in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Middendorf, a senior left-hander, did not walk a batter and only allowed an unearned run in the second inning. The La Salle High School product retired the final 12 batters in order and improved to 4-2 this season.
NKU jumped on Southern Indiana starter Josh Schultze for four runs on five hits in the second inning.
Bryan Rose started the second-inning scoring by launching a solo home run to right-center field.
Jake Morris and
Zac Asman later added run-scoring singles, while
Bradley Vanderglas picked up an RBI with a successful squeeze bunt.
Brian Erie was 2-for-4 and scored two runs for NKU, while Vanderglas finished with two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Southern Indiana gained a split with a 4-2 win. Taylor Dennis tossed a complete-game, allowing just five hits and two unearned runs.
The Screaming Eagles snapped a 2-all tie in the fifth inning by plating an unearned run. Southern Indiana added an insurance run in the sixth and held on to move its record to 20-9 overall, 12-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
NKU is 16-14 overall, 6-9 in the GLVC. The two teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at noon.
