INDIANAPOLIS - The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team received a second-half goal from
Tommy Barrick to open the 2011 exhibition slate with a 1-0 victory over IUPUI on Saturday evening.
The Norse victory avenges a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Jaguars in exhibition play last season.
The NKU goal came in the 51st minute off a set piece. After a restart 25 yards from goal,
Nicholas Chiarot got the ball wide and centered for Barrick, who banged home the game-winner. It was Barrick's first goal since Sept. 12 of last year.
The Norse outshot the Jaguars by an 11-9 margin. NKU goalkeepers
Ben Dorn and
Sanjit Kang combined to make three saves and preserve the clean sheet.
NKU will play the second of its three exhibition contests on Monday when the Norse face Rio Grande. The 2011 regular season begins on Sept. 1 at Findlay. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
