ROLLA, Mo. - Several streaks came to a halt Sunday afternoon when defending NCAA Division II national champion Northern Kentucky University dropped a 2-1 decision at Missouri S&T.
For NKU, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II poll, a two-year winning streak that had reached 17 straight ended on Sunday. The Norse (7-1 overall, 5-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) also owned eight consecutive victories against Missouri S&T, including three one-goal triumphs last season.
It marked the Norse's first defeat in nearly a year. NKU had not lost since Oct. 22, 2010, when Missouri-St. Louis pulled out a 2-1 victory against the Norse in St. Louis.
Missouri S&T, which entered Sunday ranked 17th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, struck early in the contest. Ben Emnett stole the ball and converted a 15-yard shot for his first goal of the season to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.
Michael Holder countered less than two minutes into the second half by redirecting a cross from
Nicholas Chiarot past Missouri S&T goalie Pat McNamee for his third marker of the season to knot the contest at 1-all.
Missouri S&T pushed across the winning goal at the 68:31 mark, when Kyle Schraier finished off a rebound shot in front of the net to give the Miners a 2-1 advantage they would not relinquish. Missouri S&T improved to 7-1 overall, 5-1 in the GLVC.
NKU finished with a 16-14 edge in shot attempts and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Norse play host to Wisconsin-Parkside at 5 p.m. Friday at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
