Kaylin Steinmetz etched her name in the softball record books early in her career, setting a new single-season home run mark in a doubleheader split against Saint Joseph's.
Steinmetz launched her 13th home run of the season over the left field wall in the seventh inning of a 9-2 loss in Game 2 of the twin bill. NKU (17-9, 9-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) won the opening contest by a 4-1 score.
A three-run bomb by
Katelyn Roy in the sixth inning of Game 1 broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Norse the win.
Jessica Farris added a 2-3 performance in the game while Steinmetz had an RBI-single as well.
Emily Schwaeble put in another stellar start in the opener, giving up just one run on four hits while fanning 10 Pumas batters.
Saint Joseph's (17-7, 8-2 GLVC) tacked on three runs early in Game 2 and never looked back. After another three-spot for the Pumas in the fifth inning, Schwaeble punctuated her 2-3 game with a solo home run, her third of the season.
Rachel Weaver went 2-3 with a double and two RBI to pace the offense for Saint Joseph's, which pounded out 11 hits and nine runs in the late game. Schwaeble (13-2) took the loss in her second start of the day, but picked up another three strikeouts to bring her season total to 125.
The Norse host Indianapolis on Sunday and will look to snap the Greyhounds' 20-game winning streak. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
