HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team had a successful Spring Break, winning three matches against tough competition.
The Norse (8-2), ranked No. 44 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll, opened on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Division I foe Bethune-Cookman. It marked NKU's second victory over a Division I opponent this season. The Norse defeated Dayton, 4-3, on Feb. 10.
NKU opened with a sweep of doubles play before GLVC Player of the Week
Guillaume Berman led off singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Juan Varon in the No. 2 singles flight.
Pierce Kohls,
Andre Correa and
Tyler Fraser also claimed singles victories in the match to give the Norse the win.
On Monday the Norse picked up a 9-0 sweep over Catawba. NKU dropped just one set across the board in the victory.
On Tuesday, NKU met Tusculum and came away with a 7-2 decision. The Norse swept singles play, while their two losses in doubles action were very close. Fraser and Kohls claimed a 3-0 week in doubles play and improved to 5-0 as a team.
Fraser and Correa share the team's best singles records, each at 10-1.
Christopher Angulo follows at 9-4 and Berman and Leroy each claim 8-4 records.
NKU will take some time off before facing Xavier on March 21 in a final tune-up leading into the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener against Bellarmine on March 24.
