HIGH POINT, N.C. – Lucas Diniz scored the lone goal of the game against the Northern Kentucky University's men's soccer team as Radford defeated the Norse 1-0 in the opener of the Flash Gordon Invitational at Vert Stadium.

Diniz's knocked in a cross from Nicholas Valencia in the 55th minute to put the Highlanders ahead.

The Norse started off slowly offensively but picked up the pressure in the second half.  NKU accumulated only three shots in the first half but created six shot opportunities in the second, three of which came in the final 10 minutes.

Radford finished with a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts.

NKU had four corner kicks in the second half, but the Norse were unable to create a shot opportunity on any of the chances.

Toby Frohlich stood strong in the net despite allowing a goal.  He collected four saves on the afternoon.

“They had some nice opportunities, and Toby had some crisp, solid saves,” head coach John Basalyga said of his goalkeeper's performance.

With temperatures in and around 90 during the game, the heat played a factor.

“Both teams struggled with the heat, but they did a nice job with it,” Basalyga said.  “Radford is a quality team, and they let us hang around long enough.  In the end, I think the heat got to them and it got to us, too.  We created some nice opportunities towards the end, but they did a nice job of defending.”

Radford improved to 1-0-1 on the season, while NKU fell to 0-3.

The Norse will face tournament host High Point on Sunday afternoon.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
