Ian O'Reilly prepares to block a shot on the Norse goal
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Mamadee Nyepon scored two goals to help lead the High Point University men's soccer team to a 6-0 win over Northern Kentucky University on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Flash Gordon Invitational.
The potent High Point offense was coming off a 3-1 win over Adelphi in the opening round of the invitational. After Nyepon scored the opening goal less than three minutes into the contest, Ryan Bennett put the Panthers ahead 2-0 with a goal in the 29
th minute. Ben Burdon assisted on the play.
The Norse's hopes for a comeback grew much more difficult after senior midfielder
Mohab El Tawila was shown a red card in the 32
nd minute. Down to 10 men, High Point pushed one more goal across in the 42
nd minute to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
The Panthers would go on to score three goals in the second half, including Nyepon's second goal of the game in the 50
th minute. Shawn Sloan led High Point with three assists on the afternoon.
After a slow start, the short-handed Norse offense would accumulate five shots in the second half. They had three corner kick opportunities, but could not convert.
High Point improves to 3-0 on the season. NKU, who lost to Radford 1-0 in the opener of the invitational, falls to 0-4.
The Norse are back in action Friday Sept. 7, when they travel to Indianapolis to take on Butler University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
