PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. – A home run from
Michelle Carson and three runs scored by
Alexis VanHorn weren't enough for the Northern Kentucky University softball team, which fell to Presbyterian in 12 innings, 11-9, in the opening game of the Georgia State Panther Invitational.
Carson's two-run home run in the fourth inning tied the game before VanHorn scored her second run of the day to help NKU (0-1) take the lead. VanHorn got the scoring started in the top of the third inning, scoring the first run in NKU's Division I history on a
Mandi McQueen groundout.
Cat Tarvin's RBI-single in the fifth inning once again tied the game up, this time at 4-all, where the score would remain through the regulation seven innings.
Katelyn Roy got into the mix in extra innings, picking up an RBI-double in the eighth and helping push two runs across in the ninth after a Blue Hose error. However, Presbyterian (2-4) kept pace, matching NKU's three-spot in the top of the ninth inning with three runs of their own, including a pair off the bat of Erin Taylor, who re-tied the game with a two-out, two-run homer.
Shelby Petik ended the game for Presbyterian in the 12
th inning with a walk-off two-run home run.
VanHorn led the Norse offense with a 2-for-6 performance, including an RBI-double, and three runs scored. McQueen drove in a pair of runs, as did Carson.
Emily Schwaeble started the game in the circle, racking up 11 strikeouts in the no decision.
Kelley Benhase (0-1) took the loss in 2.1 innings of relief.
Game 2 of the day saw NKU fall to the host Georgia State, 10-0, in five innings. The Panthers (2-3) put up seven runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. Paige Nowacki was 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs to lead the GSU offense.
Hayes got in the book once more with a pinch-hit double in her first career at bat, one of five Norse hits in the game.
Alex Caudill (0-1) picked up four strikeouts in the loss.
NKU concludes the Panther Invitational tomorrow with games against Oakland and Georgia State.
