NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An eventful third inning proved to be enough for the Northwestern University baseball team, as the Wildcats held on for a 4-3 victory over Northern Kentucky University on Saturday afternoon at Shelby Park.

A pair of three-run home runs by each team highlighted the third inning.

Antonio Freschet and Trevor Stevens hit back-to-back singles to start the inning for Northwestern, and both advanced one base on a sacrifice bunt by Walker Moses.  Zach Morton followed by sending a Matt Jefferson pitch over the left-field wall to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

Northwestern (3-1) added a fourth run on a single by Luke Dauch, which brought Jack Havey home. NKU (1-5) cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning.

Brad Clement, who has safely reached base in each of NKU's six games, hit a two-out single to spark the Norse offense.  Ryan Hinz followed with a single to shortstop, advancing Clement to second.

Josh Myers homered over the left-field wall to cut the Wildcat lead to 4-3, but that was the last run of the game.

The Norse threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not capitalize.  Cody Kuzniczci started the inning off with a single towards second base and was replaced by pinch runner Barrett Arnold.

A Brandon Wood sacrifice bunt sent Arnold to second.  After Zac Asman flew out to left center, Bradley Vanderglas reached on a throwing error by Magallones, which put Arnold on third base.

Arnold rounded third and was headed home before being called back to the base just before the throw by NKU head coach Todd Asalon.

Clement flew out to right field to end the Norse attack.

Havey went 3-for-4 with one run to lead the Wildcats, while Morton finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Magallones (1-1) only allowed surrendered three runs in seven innings of work for the win.  He collected four strikeouts and only walked one.

Jefferson fell to 0-2 on the season despite a solid effort on the mound for the Norse.  He struck out six batters over 8 1/3 innings.

NKU completes its three-game series at Shelby Park on Sunday against Saint Louis.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
