CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –
Katelyn Roy and
Kaylin Steinmetz each had home runs to help propel the Northern Kentucky University softball team to an 8-1 win over North Carolina Central in Day 2 action at the Frost Classic.
Roy went 1-for-3 on the day, while her three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning punctuated a four-run frame for the Norse. Steinmetz posted a 2-for-3 day and closed out a four-run second inning for the Norse with her two-run homer.
Emily Schwaeble also posted a two-hit day as the Norse totaled 11 base knocks on the afternoon.
Mandi McQueen added an RBI-double as well.
Kelley Benhase (2-2) got the win in the circle for the Norse, striking out six Eagles without a walk while allowing just one run on three hits.
The nightcap saw Eastern Kentucky claim victory in a 3-2 extra-inning affair. After the Colonels (6-2) took the lead in the first inning on a Christina Ciolek sacrifice fly, the Norse capitalized on a pair of EKU errors and a
Michelle Carson infield single to even the score in the second inning.
EKU recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Nicole Heitz singled up the middle to drive in Carissa Reisinger, who walked to lead off the inning.
NKU would strike back in the sixth inning when Schwaeble opened the frame with a screaming base hit through the left side and was lifted for pinch runner
Alesa Collinsworth.
Natalie Papi's sacrifice bunt moved Collinsworth into scoring position for
Dee Dee Davis, who laced a single into left field. Collinsworth's slide came in well ahead of the throw to the plate and knotted the score at 2-2.
All was quiet in extra innings until the bottom of the ninth when Raquel Howes, who, by international tie-breaker rules, was placed on second to start the inning, scored on a passed ball to give victory to the Colonels.
Carson finished the game 2-for-4 with a double to lead a Norse offense which managed four hits in the game. Schwaeble (0-3) took a hard-luck loss in the circle, striking out four batters in 8.1 innings of work.
NKU, now 2-6 on the year, closes out play in the Frost Classic on Sunday against Niagara. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
