FLORENCE, Ky. – The Marshall University baseball team used a three-run seventh inning to secure a 6-3 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader to complete the sweep of Northern Kentucky University on Saturday night at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium.
Marshall (5-7) scored a run in the top of the first inning and added two more in the third to jump out to the early lead.
A sacrifice fly by
Brad Clement allowed
Caleb Lonkard, who reached base on a double to start the inning for the Norse, to score and cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Norse struck again in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Thundering Herd lead to one (3-2).
Cody Kuzniczci started the inning off for NKU with a single to center field, and he stole second on a failed pickoff attempt after
Pat Hyde flew out to right field.
Brandon Wood drew a walk, and
Hunter Morey singled to bring Kuzniczci home for the second Norse run of the game.
After two scoreless innings, Marshall loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and Aaron Bossi was hit by a
Brett Loeding pitch to drive in a run. A single by Mardu Smith drove in two runs to push the Thundering Herd advantage to 6-2.
The NKU offense threatened in the bottom of the inning.
Lonkard reached base on an error by a Bossi, followed by a
Zac Asman strikeout.
Brad Clement singled to right field to advance Lonkard advanced to second.
Brett Cisper loaded the bases for the Norse with a single to third base.
Kuzniczci reached base on a fielder's choice that saw Clement out on the play, but Lonkard was able to score for the final Norse run of the game.
Nathan Gomez went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Andrew Dundon finished 2-for-3 for Marshall.
Wayland Moore (3-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win. He struck out five batters while only walking one.
Brett Cisper went 3-for-4 for the Norse.
In the opener, Isaac Ballou collected two RBIs and scored a run while going 3-for-5 to lead the Thundering Herd to a 7-1 win. Chase Vogelbach also finished 3-for-5 for Marshall.
Chase Boster (1-1) only surrendered one run on two hits over six innings on the mound for Marshall.
NKU and Marshall are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
