SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gaither Bumgardner only allowed one run on three hits in seven innings on the mound to lead the South Carolina Upstate baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Northern Kentucky University at the Cleveland S. Harley Park on Saturday.
A single by Brody Greer brought Brandon Patterson home to give USC Upstate (15-11 overall, 4-5 in the Atlantic Sun Conference) the early 2-0 advantage after two innings.
The Norse, however, evened the game in the top of the fourth.
Brad Clement was hit by a Bumgardner pitch to begin the inning for NKU.
Josh Myers followed with a single to right center, sending Clement to third. Clement proceeded to score as
Cody Kuzniczci grounded into a double play.
The Spartans broke the game open in the sixth inning, bringing home three runs to stretch their lead to 4-1.
NKU (3-24 overall, 1-5 in the A-Sun) threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but Greer, who took over on the mound to start the seventh inning, struck out the final Norse batter to end the game.
Trey Richardson went 2-for-4 with a run to lead the way for USC Upstate, while Patterson scored twice after going 1-for-4.
Bumgardner (3-0) remained perfect on the season for the Spartans with Greer earning his first save. Greer pitched two innings of relief and did not surrender a hit. Together, the two recorded seven strikeouts and walked five batters.
Myers finished 2-for-2 and drew two walks to lead the Norse offense. Clement was hit by a pitch twice and went 1-for-2 on the day.
