DELAND, Fla. – Jessica Griffin's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning led Stetson University to a 2-1, extra-inning victory over Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
NKU pitcher
Emily Schwaeble was again solid in the circle, surrendering two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out six batters in 7.2 innings of work. It is the eighth time in her last nine starts that she has given up fewer than three runs.
Dee Dee Davis had two hits, including a double, for a Norse offense that totaled five hits on the day.
The Hatters (20-13, 3-6 A-Sun) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Demi Meza laced an RBI single to right field, scoring Brittany Hawn. The Norse (7-23, 1-11 A-Sun) got the run back in the top of the second after
Michelle Carson singled to open the frame.
Alexis VanHorn's sacrifice bunt allowed Carson to take second, and a wild pitch moved the Norse third baseman to third to set up
Dana Jarboe's RBI infield single to score Carson.
The bats went quiet for the rest of regulation, with
Natalie Papi's double to lead off the sixth inning standing as NKU's only additional offense through the first seven innings.
Davis started off the eighth for the Norse with a single to right center and advanced to second on a Schwaeble groundout. The Hatters then intentionally walked Carson before getting VanHorn out on strikes to end the Norse threat in the first extra frame.
Stetson's response came quickly, as Chrissy Morello reached on a two-out fielding error and quickly stole second. Griffin then singled past a diving Davis into centerfield, allowing the speedy Morello to come around with the winning run.
Courtney Brandt (7-5) got the win in the circle for the Hatters, striking out five in eight innings of work.
The Norse return to action on Tuesday for a midweek doubleheader at Morehead State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
