BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team got three home runs on the day, but could not push past their opponents as the Norse took losses to Morehead State (8-6) and Campbell (6-4) on Day 1 of the Camel Stampede Tournament.
In the opener against Morehead State, the Eagles rallied for three runs in the top of the third inning before
Katelyn Roy tied the game on one swing of the bat, launching her third long ball of the season over the left field wall to bring in
KC Straley and
Emily Schwaeble.
MSU kept the pressure on, however, scoring four more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth before the Norse started their comeback attempt in the sixth inning.
After walks to
Natalie Papi and
Tory Speakman,
Mandi McQueen cut the lead to four with a double down the right field line to score Papi. Straley followed up with an RBI bunt single before Roy struck again with an RBI single to left.
The Norse got a one-out base runner in the seventh, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as the game finished with the 8-6 final score.
Straley was 2-for-3 and Roy went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Norse.
In the late game against host Campbell, Papi got the Norse on the board first with a solo home run, her second of the season, to lead off the second inning. The Camels came back with a pair of runs in the second before
Michelle Carson's RBI single to left tied the game at 2-2.
The Camels continued to add runs, scoring one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to open up a four-run advantage.
McQueen put the Norse back in striking distance in the top of the seventh with a two-out, two-run home run, her second of the season, to cut the deficit in half. The Norse could not keep the rally going, however, and fell by the 6-4 final score.
The Norse pounded out 10 hits on the game, including two each by
Dee Dee Davis, Schwaeble, Papi and Carson.
The Norse will conclude play at the Camel Stampede on Saturday, taking on Drexel and Norfolk State beginning at 10 a.m.
