Week 8 Midweek notes

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team closes out its eight-game road stint on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against in-state rival Morehead State.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at University Field.

Links to live stats for the doubleheader will be available at nkunorse.com.

The Norse (7-23 overall, 1-11 Atlantic Sun Conference) picked up their first A-Sun victory on Friday with a 3-1 win over Stetson.  NKU pitcher Emily Schwaeble was stellar on the weekend, picking up 14 strikeouts in the victory and 20 total strikeouts in the three-game series.

NKU is looking to pick up some momentum entering this weekend's A-Sun showdown against Jacksonville at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.

MOREHEAD STATE SCOUTING REPORT: The Eagles stand at 11-11 overall on the season, boasting a .310 team batting average. Elizabeth Wagner stands at the team's leading hitter with a .492 batting average, ranking in the top 10 nationally in the statistic.  Wagner also boasts seven doubles and 12 RBIs on the year.  In the circle, Katie Pfost leads the pitching staff with a 6-6 record and a 3.11 earned run average.  Pfost has picked up a pair of shutouts on the season and struck out 73 batters in 74.1 innings of work.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE EAGLES: A four-run fourth inning put the Eagles up for good as Morehead State claimed an 8-6 victory over NKU on March 8 at the Campbell Camel Stampede earlier this season.  The Norse rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to spur their comeback bid, but could not push the tying run across.  Katelyn Roy had a two-hit game, including a home run and four RBIs.  KC Straley also went 2-for-3 on the contest.  Morehead holds the lead in the all-time series between the clubs, 20-14-1.

SCHWAEBLE TIES THE RECORD: With a one-out solo home run in the top of the fourth inning in NKU's 3-1 win over Stetson on Friday, Emily Schwaeble tied NKU's career home run record with her 31st long ball.  With her next home run, Schwaeble will overtake the top spot alone, becoming the third Norse batter in five years to set a new high-water mark in the career home run race.

VANHORN FINDS A WAY: Freshman shortstop Alexis VanHorn is getting on base however she can in A-Sun play, to the tune of a .478 on-base percentage in nine appearances, including eight starts.  VanHorn has four hits in 16 at bats, including a double and a homer, has walked six times and been hit by a pitch.  She enters the midweek doubleheader at Morehead State on a five-game on-base streak, the team's longest active streak.
