HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
Dee Dee Davis hit three doubles and extended her hitting streak to a season-high six games, but the Northern Kentucky University softball team could not keep up with Marshall as the Norse dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field.
A pair of Davis doubles were all the hits the Norse managed in a 4-1 loss in Game 1. NKU's run scored in the seventh inning when
Emily Schwaeble reached on a fielder's choice and Davis came around when Marshall's Jazmine Valle committed a throwing error trying to get Davis at third base.
The Thundering Herd (26-14) opened the scoring in the first inning when Shaelynn Braxton's double to left center scored a pair of runs before a Norse error allowed Braxton to cross the plate. Alyssa Cook added a pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning.
Braxton went 2-for-3 in the opener and was the only Marshall player to claim multiple hits off Schwaeble, who struck out five in the loss.
Marshall struck first in Game 2 as well, plating three runs on a Braxton RBI single and a Valle two-run home run in the first inning. The Thundering Herd added runs in the second, third and fifth innings to extend the lead to 6-0 before NKU got on the board in the seventh.
Taylor Zuberer picked up her first hit of the season in a pinch hit role and came around to score on a fielding error with
Alex Caudill at the plate. The Norse couldn't sustain the rally, ending the game in a 6-1 final score.
Davis,
Alexis VanHorn and
Tory Speakman also had hits in the contest for NKU, which fell to 7-30 on the season.
The Norse return to Atlantic Sun Conference action this weekend, hosting East Tennessee State for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon before the series wraps up with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
