RICHMOND, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University pitcher
Alex Caudill carried a one-hit shutout through six innings against Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, but EKU came through in the seventh inning to claim a 3-2 victory in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Gertrude Hood Field.
Caudill scattered five hits and struck out three in the contest, which was the definition of a pitchers' duel over the first six frames.
All of the scoring in the contest came in the seventh inning, beginning when
Michelle Carson crushed a 1-0 pitch down the line in left field for her third home run of the season.
Dee Dee Davis later shot a double down the left field line to score
KC Straley, extending the Norse lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, EKU (31-17) responded on a Lauren Mitchell RBI single to score Christina Ciolek, who doubled to lead off the frame. After an infield single by pinch hitter Nicole Heitz, Kayla Joyce ended the game with a two-run double to left field.
The Norse (11-35) collected five hits against EKU hurler Shaylon Robb, who struck out nine in improving to 9-8 on the season.
In the opener, EKU put up runs in five different innings to claim an 8-0 run-rule decision over the Norse. The Colonels opened the game up with a run in the first inning followed by a three-run second inning, keyed by a two-run double from Joyce and an RBI single by Haley Schenasi.
The Norse drew four walks in the game but managed just two hits in the contest. Davis was 0-for-3 on the game, ending her hitting streak at 13 games.
The Norse head to a warmer climate this weekend, heading south to face Florida Gulf Coast for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
