FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sean Dwyer finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team to a 12-2 victory over Northern Kentucky University in Atlantic Sun Conference play on Sunday at Swanson Stadium.
Dwyer's two-out RBI double down the left-field line brought home Brandon Bednar, who reached base on a walk, to put FGCU (25-16 overall, 11-7 in the A-Sun) on the scoreboard in the first inning. The Eagles added a run in the second and two in the third to take a 4-0 lead, and they did not slow down.
FGCU eventually jumped out to a 12-0 advantage, highlighted by a six-run fifth inning, before NKU (8-35 overall, 3-15 in the A-Sun) scored two runs in the top of the eighth frame to avoid the shutout.
Anthony Vagnier reached base when he was hit by a Danny Patrick pitch to start the inning for the Norse, and he came home on a
Zac Asman double. A two-out double to right center by
Brett Cisper allowed Asman to score for the final margin of the game.
Tyler Selesky went 3-for-3 as well for the Eagles, and he collected three RBIs and scored a run on the day. Bednar and Brooks Beisner also recorded multi-hit and games with Bednar scoring three times and Beisner twice.
Harrison Cooney (3-5) pitched six scoreless innings and only surrendered two hits in the win for FGCU. He walked just one batter while striking out five.
Zac Asman led the Norse offense, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Cisper,
Logan Spurlin and
Caleb Lonkard also collected hits on the day.
