COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University baseball team took advantage of two costly Northern Kentucky University errors to score the winning runs in both games Wednesday and sweep a non-conference doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes won the opener, 9-8, and took the nightcap by a 6-5 score.
Ryan Cypret scored the game-winning run of the nightcap to give the Buckeyes a 6-5 victory and a sweep of the doubleheader. He set up the final play by drawing a walk to start the bottom of the ninth inning, and a sacrifice bunt sent him to second. Patrick Porter was intentionally walked, and Cypret and Porter each advanced on a ground out. Aaron Gretz reached base on a fielding error by
Brett Loeding, and Cypret came home with the winning run.
Cody Kuzniczci put NKU (8-37) ahead in the fourth inning when he sent a two-out double into left-center field to drive in
Brad Clement and
Josh Myers. A grand slam by Brad Hallberg gave the Buckeyes a 4-2 lead after six innings, and Ohio State tacked on an extra run the following frame to extend its lead.
The Norse evened the game in the top of the eighth.
Zac Asman started the rally with a two-out single, and
Bradley Vanderglas drew a walk. Clement then stepped to the plate and sent a 2-0 David Fathalikhani pitch over the left-field wall to even the score at 5-all.
NKU put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth but could not bring them home.
Porter finished 2-for-4 and scored twice for Ohio State, while Joe Ciamacco and Jacob Bosiokovic went 2-for-5. Bosiokovic added a run and an RBI.
Clement recorded three RBIs and scored twice while going 3-for-4 to lead the Norse in Game 2. Vanderglas and Myers each recorded two hits and added a run.
In the opener, an RBI single by Clement gave NKU the lead after the first, but Ohio State scored runs in the second and third frames to take a 2-1 lead. Both teams added runs in the fourth inning, but NKU used a five-run top of the fifth inning, highlighted by Myers' two-run home run over the left-field wall, to take a 7-3 advantage. The Buckeyes, however, answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs to tie the contest at 7-all.
A throwing error by Kuzniczci and an interference call allowed Joe Ciamacco to advance to third, and Jake Brobst, who pinch ran for Gretz, came home to give Ohio State a 9-8 lead in the seventh inning. The Ohio State pitching staff retired the Norse in order over the final two innings to hold on for the win.
Ciamacco and Gretz finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Buckeyes offense in Game 1. Gretz also scored twice. Trace Dempsey earned his 14th save of the year after pitching a scoreless ninth.
Clement went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead NKU. Asman, Vanderglas, Myers,
Logan Spurlin and
Quint Heady each added hits as well.
Greg Greve (4-0) recorded both wins to remain undefeated on the year. He pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings and only surrendered one hit. Greve collected two strikeouts and walked three batters on the day.
NKU returns to action on Friday when the Norse welcome Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb to the Bill Aker Baseball Complex for the opener of a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats and broadcast information will be available at NKUNorse.com.
