HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Josh Cotham's complete-game performance led the Lipscomb University baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Northern Kentucky University in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Friday at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
Cotham (3-4) scattered three hits on the day and recorded seven strikeouts en route to Lipscomb's first nine-inning effort of the season. He retired the first 14 batters he faced and only allowed one walk.
The lone run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Lipcomb's Gray Hutchinson reached base on a throwing error by
Bradley Vanderglas, and he scored on an Austin Sistrunk double to left field.
The Norse threatened in the bottom of the fifth, sparked by a
Logan Spurlin two-out single through the left side.
Quint Heady drew a walk, and
Pat Hyde loaded the bases with a single. The frame ended, however, before NKU could bring the tying run home.
Heady collected the third and final hit for the Norse with a single to center field in the eighth inning.
Sistruck, Lee Wilson and Chad Shannon each collected hits on the day for the Bisons.
Aric Harris (1-5) took the loss after six innings of work for NKU. He only allowed three hits and did not surrender an earned run. He collected three strikeouts and walked seven batters.
Drew Campbell pitched three scoreless innings for the Norse. He struck out two and walked one without surrendering a hit.
Lipscomb improved to 16-30 overall and 6-13 in the A-Sun, while NKU fell to 8-38 on the year and 3-16 in the conference.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for the second contest of a three-game series with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Live stats and broadcast information will be available at NKUNorse.com.
