Games Notes
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team hosts UNC Asheville in a nonconference, midweek clash on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
The UNC Asheville Bulldogs are 1-6-3 overall this season and 0-3-2 in the Big South Conference. The Norse have faced one other Big South team this season in High Point, and they played the Panthers to a 1-1 draw in Dayton, Ohio.
NKU traveled to Asheville last season and beat the Bulldogs, 2-1, in double-overtime.
Justin Wolstenholme scored his first career goal for the Norse in the first half of the contest, giving NKU the 1-0 lead at the break. Asheville's Tevin Beckwith netted an equalizer in the 72nd minute, sending the contest to overtime. The Norse were awarded a penalty in the 107th minute, and senior
Brendan Murphy converted the spot kick, giving the Norse the 2-1 victory.
The Norse have had a hard time scoring goals so far this season. They have netted 11 goals on the year, coming from four different players –
Cian McDonald,
Caleb Eastham,
Kobie Qualah and
Ronald Moss. McDonald leads the team with four goals and two assists, but freshman Qualah has been a key contributor as of late. He has netted three goals this season with his most recent coming in the 2-1 loss to Marshall on Oct. 15.
Freshman
Jacob Cunningham has also found a place in the Norse attack, playing in the central midfield. He is tied for the team lead in assists with two. Cunningham is one of many freshmen that are getting significant playing time this season. Freshman
Dylan Carss has started every game for the Norse this year as a fullback and has played the second-most minutes of anyone on the team.
The match is set to kickoff at 6 p.m., and it is Greek Night at the NKU Soccer Stadium. The fraternity or sorority with the most attendance with receive a free pizza party and get to watch the Norse take on Eastern Illinois on Oct. 29 from the Founder's Room suite at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
