SAN DIEGO – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team found itself behind early to San Diego in both games of Saturday's doubleheader and was unable to recover, as the Toreros cruised to a 13-3 victory in the opener and a 12-0 win in the nightcap at Folwer Park in non-conference action.
Andrew Daniel and Louie Lechich each went 5-for-8 on the day to lead the San Diego (5-1) attack. Daniel recorded a home run and a double as he scored six times over the two games, while Lechich batted in three runs and scored four times. Connor Joe collected nine RBIs in the doubleheader, and he finished 5-for-9 with two home runs and a double.
San Diego took advantage of an
Adam Jafine wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning of Game 1, but NKU (1-6) answered in the top of the second.
Logan Spurlin tied the game with his second home run of the season, and
Cody Kuzniczci followed with a single.
Kyle Colletta plated Kuzniczci with a two-out single to left field to give the Norse a 2-1 advantage.
The lead was short-lived, however. In the bottom of the frame, Brandon DeFazio started the comeback by reaching on a fielder's choice, which saw Jesse Jenner out on the play after he hit a single to start the inning for the Toreros.
DeFazio stole second before Kyle Holder earned a walk, and Lechich was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Joe then stepped to the plate and sent a two-out shot over the left-field wall. San Diego tacked on one more run on a Josh Goossen-Brown single that scored Daniel for a 6-2 advantage.
The Toreros added three runs in the third inning before Daniel collected his second homer of the season and the third in the game for San Diego to stretch its lead to 10-2. Single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings put the Toreros ahead, 13-2.
Back-to-back singles by Spurlin and Kuzniczci loaded the bases to start the offense for NKU after
Jordan Procyshen reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth.
Anthony Vagnier advanced Spurlin and Kuzniczci a base as Procyshen was called out on the play.
Ryan LeFevers then sent a single through the left side to score Spurlin for the final margin of the game.
In the nightcap, the Toreros scored four runs in the first inning and added two more in the second for an early 6-0 lead. Back-to-back hits by Lechich and Joe put Lechich in scoring position, and a Troy Conyers double to right-centerfield allowed both to score for an 8-0 San Diego lead.
Three more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh accounted for the final margin as the Toreros took advantage of five NKU errors in Game 2. The Norse recorded eight hits in the nightcap but were unable to bring a run home.
Drew Jacobs (1-0) earned the win in the opener for San Diego after pitching 3.1 innings of relief and only allowing one earned run. Lechich (2-0), who started the first two games of the series in the outfield, recorded his second victory of the season in Game 2. He went six innings and scattered eight hits while striking out six batters.
Spurlin, who extended his hitting streak to seven games, went 5-for-8 over the two games with a home run and two runs to lead the Norse offense, while LeFevers finished 4-for-8 with an RBI. Kuzniczci collected three hits on the day as did Colletta, and
Zac Asman recorded hits in both games to stretch his hitting streak to six.
Jafine (0-2) went 2.1 innings after surrendering eight earned runs on seven hits with one strike out in Game 1 for the Norse, while
Aric Harris (0-1) took the loss in the nightcap. Harris went four innings for the Norse and allowed eight runs on 10 hits.
NKU and San Diego conclude the four-game series tomorrow afternoon with the Norse looking to avoid the series sweep. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Eastern. Links to live stats, video and John Asalon's audio broadcast will be available at nkunorse.com.
