LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Katelyn Roy collected three hits for the Northern Kentucky University softball team, but hits early and often gave IUPUI a 21-5 victory in Day 2 action at the Cardinal Classic, hosted by the University of Louisville.
Roy went 3-for-3 on the day, blasting her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning. The junior right fielder drove in three runs and picked up her first career stolen base to lead the NKU offense.
Mandi McQueen also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored. NKU combined for eight hits on the day.
Alyssa Neff, Morgan Schlobohm and Roni Patterson each had 3-for-4 days at the plate while Lindsey Richards went 3-for-3 as the Jaguars pounded out 18 hits on the game. Ten different players had hits for IUPUI, including eight of the nine in the starting lineup.
The Jaguars took advantage of three NKU errors in the top of the first inning to plate seven runs and never looked back. NKU struck back quickly in the bottom of the frame starting with a leadoff walk to
KC Straley, who promptly stole second base and came in to score on a
Mandi McQueen double. Roy followed with an RBI single to plate McQueen and cut the advantage to 7-2 after one inning.
IUPUI continued to pour on the offensive pressure, scoring in each inning. The Jaguars plated five more runs in the second inning, and added four more in the third on back-to-back home runs by Maggie Good and Richards. IUPUI closed out its scoring with two more runs in the fifth inning.
NKU got back on the board in the fifth inning when
Allie Conner led off the inning with a double to the wall in left field. After Straley lined out to second base, McQueen laid down a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Conner later came in to score on a wild pitch before Roy's two-run home run capped off the scoring.
Rachel Kohlman and
Natalie Papi worked to continue the two-out rally with solid singles, but a pop up by
Dani Devlin ended the scoring, and the game.
Emili Escamilla (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Jaguars, surrendering three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. The loss fell to
Paige McQueen, who is now 1-1 on the year.
NKU closes out the Cardinal Classic on Sunday with a pair of games. NKU will take on host Louisville for a 12:30 p.m. first pitch. Immediately following that game, the Norse will conclude their weekend with a game against Eastern Kentucky. Live stats and video links are available at nkunorse.com.
