FLORENCE, Ky. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team pounded out 34 hits while sweeping a doubleheader from Northern Kentucky University on Saturday at the UC Health Stadium.
Eastern Michigan collected 18 hits in the opener and coasted to a 13-3 win, and the Eagles completed the sweep with a 16-hit performance during a 13-2 victory in the nightcap.
Mitchell McGeein scored four times and drove in four runs to lead Eastern Michigan in the opener. Adam Sonabend went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Sam Ott and Lee Longo both scored three times. The Eagles built an 8-0 lead before NKU's
Cody Kuzniczci hit a three-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning to slice the visitors' advantage to 8-3.
Eastern Michigan, however, responded with a run in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh to ice the win. Kuzniczci and
Kyle Colletta both were 2-for-4 at the plate to lead NKU in the opener. The Norse finished with nine hits.
In the nightcap, Eastern Michigan plated four runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to build a 7-0 lead. McGeein hammered a pair of home runs and had three RBIs for the Eagles, who improved to 8-8. Sonabend was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, including a three-run double in the eighth inning.
Kuzniczci was 2-for-4 in Game 2 to lead NKU, which dropped to 3-13. Norse starter
Adam Jafine gave up seven runs – six of those earned – and eight hits in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Wendell Wright relieved Jafine and pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Norse, scattering six hits and striking out two. NKU collected six hits in the nightcap.
Eastern Michigan is now 4-0 all-time against NKU. The Norse are 6-23 all-time against members of the Mid-American Conference. The Norse will face two other members of the MAC – Miami (Ohio) and Ball State – later this spring.
The two teams complete the weekend series Sunday at noon with a single game at the UC Health Stadium. Fans will be able to pick up their 2014 spring sports pocket schedule at Sunday's series finale. Fans will also have the opportunity to participate in Sunday Funday Bingo, presented by Toppers Pizza, at every Sunday home game this season.
Bingo cards will be available upon entrance into the stadium and are based on plays occurring during the game. The first two fans to complete their cards will receive a gift card to Toppers Pizza.
