OXFORD, Ohio – Dan Walsh's run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Miami (Ohio) University baseball team to a 7-6 win over Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday night at Hayden Park.
Tied at 6-all, Scott Slappey led off the bottom of the ninth with a double off
Jake Shaw and was sacrificed to third. NKU intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases, but Walsh singled to left field and drove in Slappey with the winning run.
Gary Russo led Miami (8-9) with a home run and three RBIs. The RedHawks held a 6-2 advantage entering the top of the sixth, but NKU (3-14) scored three times to slice Miami's lead to 6-5.
Cole Bauml hit a sacrifice fly and
David Head had an RBI grounder to key the sixth-inning rally, and
Josh Myers later added an RBI single to bring NKU to within a run.
NKU tied the game at 6-all in the top of the eighth when
Zac Asman hit a solo home run over the left-field wall. It was Asman's first homer of the season.
Logan Spurlin was 1-for-5 and scored a run. Spurlin has now safely reached base in each of the Norse's 17 games this season. Dating back to last season, he has made it to first base in the last 21 games for NKU.
Charlie Suich pitched a perfect ninth inning and picked up the win. Shaw, who went 3 1/3 innings in relief and struck out two batters, took the loss.
Miami is now 15-1 all-time against NKU. The RedHawks collected 12 hits Tuesday night but also committed three errors. The Norse finished with five hits and had two errors.
NKU plays host to Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex. The 2014 baseball schedule posters and koozies will be given away as part of opening day festivities at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
