HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – A 7-6 third-set victory by South Carolina Upstate's Isabel Von Stryk made the difference in a 4-3 victory over Northern Kentucky University in women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex.
Von Stryk defeated NKU's
Maria Voscekova in the top singles flight in the only match of the day to play out to three sets. The Norse senior took the first set, 6-3, before falling 6-2 in the second set to set up the thrilling finish. The loss dropped Voscekova to 12-7 on the season and was her third loss in as many home matches this spring.
The NKU senior did taste victory in doubles play, teaming with
Danielle Donahue for their 11
th win of the season in besting Von Stryk and Anna Zoske, 8-6.
Yasmine Xantos and
Sierra Nellessen also won their doubles match over Sarah Vande Berg and Lindsey Buenger, 8-4, to give NKU the doubles point.
Xantos and Nellessen again defeated Vande Berg and Buenger, respectively, in singles action as well. Nellessen moved to 9-7 overall while Xantos leveled her conference record at 2-2.
With the loss, NKU fell to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in A-Sun play. It marked just the second win of the season for USC Upstate, which also improved to 1-3 in the league.
The Norse are back in action on Thursday, as they go out of conference to take on Wright State. First serve from the Yeager Tennis Complex is set for 1:30 p.m.
