Box scoreOXFORD, Ohio – Kayla Ledbetter and Allie Larrabee each had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Miami University softball team to an 8-0 win over Northern Kentucky University in non-conference play on Wednesday night.
Eryn McCarver added a pair of hits for Miami, which improved to 14-15 on the season.
Dana Jarboe had two of NKU's three hits on the day, including a double, as the Norse dropped their sixth straight game and fell to 3-27.
Paige Myers got the win in the circle for the RedHawks, striking out seven in a three-hit shutout to improve her pitching record to 7-4.
Larrabee got the RedHawks on the board early, lacing a two-run double to right-centerfield in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone. The Norse looked to answer after back-to-back walks to
Dani Devlin and
Natalie Papi preceded a
Michelle Carson single to load the bases with one out. However,
Nicolette Hayes would strike out and
Mandi McQueen hit an infield popup that ended the rally and left the bases loaded.
Miami next touched the plate in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three NKU errors to plate five runs. McCarver ended the game with an RBI double to left-centerfield in the fifth inning, invoking the eight-run rule.
The game was to be the first of a scheduled doubleheader, but contining rain in the area caused the cancellation of the nightcap.
The Norse return to action on Saturday to open a three-game series against Atlantic Sun Conference rival Stetson. It's Strike Out Cancer weekend, as the Norse team with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. First pitch from the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field is scheduled for noon.
