Devlin homers as Norse fall at FGCU

FT. MYERS, Fla. – Dani Devlin hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season as the Northern Kentucky University softball team suffered a 15-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast to close out the weekend's Atlantic Sun Conference series.

With the loss, NKU fell to 4-16 on the season and 1-2 in A-Sun play. Devlin's blast came in the fourth inning, as did Sydney Ferrante's single, serving as the whole of NKU's offense on the day.

FGCU (20-16, 3-3 A-Sun) pounded out 14 hits to score 15 runs in the contest. Six different players claimed two-hit days with Alexis Ross adding a three-run triple and Bri McGuire going 1-for-2 with a grand slam to highlight the Eagles' effort.

McGuire's slam set the tone in the first inning before FGCU added two more runs in the second inning. After Devlin's bomb in the fourth, FGCU answered with a nine-run fourth inning to set the final score.

Alex Caudill (2-4) took the loss in the circle for the Norse, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in just over an inning of work. Ashley Dobson (10-3) got the win, striking out four Norse batters in the complete-game effort.

The Norse will look to rebound on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Marshall for a nonconference doubleheader. NKU then returns home for a three-game conference series against Lipscomb. Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m., while Sunday's series finale will also begin at 1 p.m.
