JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team scored early and often on Saturday afternoon, but could not fend off a late comeback from East Tennessee State as the Norse fell 7-6 in 10 innings at Thomas Stadium to even the three-game series.
NKU (1-5) scattered six runs across five different innings and held a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth where the Buccaneers tied the game on a solo homer and RBI single. ETSU (2-3) went on to gain the series split on a game-winning RBI single off the bat of Kevin Phillips in the bottom of the 10th.
Conor Ledger led the NKU offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to account for three of NKU's six runs.
Will Haueter and
Logan Spurlin each posted a pair of RBI on the day while Spurlin clubbed his first home run of the season.
Ledger got the Norse off to a scoring start, crossing on a sacrifice fly from Haueter in the top of the first after reaching on a lead-off single.
A trio of ETSU hits in the bottom of the second put the Buccaneers up 2-1 before Ledger again led off the third inning with a single and scored the game-tying run on a Buccaneer error.
Spurlin's solo shot in the fourth and a two-run fifth from NKU handed the Norse a 5-2 advantage. However, the Bucs tacked on a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth and again in the sixth to make it a one-run game at 5-4 through six innings.
NKU's final run was scored in the top of the eighth when
Ryan LeFevers crossed home on a sacrifice fly, giving the Norse a 6-4 advantage that they took to the bottom of the ninth.
Reliever
Mitch Asman absorbed the loss while ETSU's Peyton Taylor got the win after tossing a scoreless 10th. NKU relievers
Charlie Jerger and
Aric Harris combined for two innings of scoreless relief.
The Norse look to earn their first series win of the season in the finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Thomas Stadium.
NORSE NOTES:- The Norse batted .600 with runners on third and less than two outs, converting on three of five opportunities. Additionally, NKU lead-off hitters went 5-of-10 on Saturday.
- NKU has totaled 22 hits across the last two games and are led by Ledger who has gone 4-of-8 against the Bucs while Haueter and Quint Heady are each 3-of-8 during the series.
