HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team cruised to a 7-1 victory over Northwestern as starting pitcher
Matt Ianni and reliever
Nick Beard combined to allow just three hits and one run on Tuesday afternoon at Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
Ianni, who made his first collegiate start and second appearance, fanned five batters over 4.0 innings pitched. The Wildcats managed just two hits against the right-hander who allowed one run and walked two.
Nick Beard took over in the fifth inning and picked up his second win of the season after twirling 5.0 scoreless innings with one hit. Beard retired 14 of his 17 batters faced.
Offensively,
Trey Ganns led the charge after going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Kyle Colletta and
Anthony Vagnier each clubbed a pair of hits while
Dominic Mercurio raked in a pair of RBI.
Northwestern (5-15) plated the game's first run, but the Norse (7-13) took over from there, tying the game in the bottom of the first after
Quint Heady crossed on a wild pitch.
Mike Moffatt doubled to left field for the first of three hits in the bottom of the second and later scored on a groundout to push the Norse lead to 2-1 early.
A three-run fifth frame highlighted the offensive display. Vagnier slid home on a Colletta single. An RBI double from Ganns plated another, while
Will Haueter crossed on an error for a 5-1 NKU advantage.
Two more runs from the Norse in the bottom of the eighth sealed the victory. The Norse plated the game's final runs on RBI knocks from
Logan Spurlin and
Dominic Mercurio.
The Norse return to action when they close out their seven-game homestand with a three-game series against Horizon League foe Oakland. The series is set to begin on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
NORSE NOTES:- NKU's leadoff hitters batted .625 on the day, reaching base five times in eight innings.
- The Norse out-hit Northwestern, 13-3, marking the 11th game this season the Norse have posted double-figure hits.
- Beard, a sophomore reliever, now has a team-best 2.12 ERA and has held opponents to five runs over 17.0 innings pitched this season. He has fanned 15 while issuing just six walks.
