@NKUNorseBSB falls to Wright State in doubleheader

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Quint Heady went 4-for-7 with two runs scored across two games against Wright State on Sunday afternoon but the Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to the Horizon League-leading Raiders, 5-2, in game one and 13-3 in the nightcap at Bill Aker Baseball Complex.

With the results, NKU slips to 15-26 overall and 4-15 in the Horizon League while Wright State improves to 28-12 and 12-3 in the HL.

The Norse return to action on Tuesday, April 26 for a nonconference tilt at Ball State at 3 p.m.

Game one (Wright State 5, Northern Kentucky 2)

Trey Ganns got the start for NKU in game one, twirling a career-high 7.0 innings. The sophomore gave up nine hits and four runs, three earned while walking two and fanning five.

Ganns absorbed the loss with the Raiders peppering single runs across five different innings en route to the victory.

Charlie Jerger closed the game. He tossed 2.0 innings and gave up one run.

The Norse offense struggled early against WSU starter Caleb Sampen who twirled a complete game, allowing six hits and two runs.

Wright State took a 2-0 lead after an RBI double in the fourth and solo homer in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Heady got NKU on the board. The senior clubbed a leadoff single and crossed on a groundout to cut the WSU lead to 2-1.

However, the Raiders scored one run in each of the final three innings to seal the victory despite an eighth-inning run from NKU on a Brad Bohlen RBI single.

Game two (Wright State 13, Northern Kentucky 3)

Game two saw NKU distribute nine hits among eight different Norse with Heady going 2-for-4 with a double.

Wright State took a 3-0 lead through the first two innings before the Norse responded with a run on a Conor Ledger groundout to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third.

The Raider offense ignited for three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to seal the victory as NKU's final pair of runs crossed on a Ganns RBI double in the fourth and a Bohlen RBI single in the sixth.

Gabe Snyder went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI to help fuel the Raider offense.

NORSE NOTES:

·         Heady went 5-for-10 with three runs scored across three League games this weekend.

·         Logan Spurlin, a senior catcher, leads the HL in runners caught stealing and pushed his season total to 18 on Sunday.

·         Alex Bolia pitched the final inning of game two and has held opponents scoreless in his last three outings.
