Pair of second-half goals doom @NKUNorseMSOC

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team fell to Evansville, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon after the Purple Aces netted a pair of goals in the second half at NKU Soccer Stadium.

"It was a hot day and we didn't take very many chances. We got lazy on defense and didn't want to move our feet," said head coach John Basalyga. "Give credit to them, they scored two goals, one on a set piece, so it wasn't because of a break down. We didn't create a whole lot of chances but that's something we need to work on in practice. We have a lot of young guys on the field so it's a growing process and learning situation that, hopefully, as we go through the season, they'll pick up on."

NKU moves to 0-1-1 on the season while Evansville improves to 1-1-0.

Between the Posts
  • Sophomore Christian Carey earned his second-straight start in goal for NKU (0-1-1), clocking 45:00 minutes after playing the entire first half while he and the Norse defense held UE scoreless.
  • Freshman Jared Leyland started the second half and also added a pair of saves for the Norse.

First Half Summary
  • The teams managed three shots combined in the first half, all on target.
  • NKU struggled to connect and build offensive momentum, as neither team got a shot off until the 24th minute of play when Evansville's Ian McGrath took a header shot off a corner kick inside the goalie box.
  • Anders Mathiesen managed NKU's only shot of the first half, coming in the 30th minute. The freshman forced a diving save from the Evansville goalkeeper, Frederik Reimer, to keep it scoreless.

Second Half Summary
  • Both teams picked up the intensity in the second half, with NKU firing four total shots to Evansville's 11.
  • Evansville's first goal came in the 60th minute when Zac Blaydes sent a corner kick inside the box to Jared Robinson who attempted a header. UE's Ben Weber gathered the rebound that deflected off NKU goalkeeper Leyland and deposited it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Aces controlled possession throughout the second stanza, earning 12 corner kicks in the second half meanwhile NKU's offense was stifled by three offside calls.
  • UE netted its insurance goal in the 84th minute when Ian Gammon received a cross from Cesar Guitunga and found the back of the net from the close right wing.

Norse Notes
  • Ten NKU freshmen saw action in Sunday's game, six of which logged at least 45 minutes of play. Mathiesen and Tucker Monheimer, both freshmen, led the Norse with two shots apiece for four of the squad's five total shot attempts.
