HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky men's soccer team recorded its seventh shutout of the season in a 0-0 draw against UIC on Saturday afternoon. The Norse move to 6-3-4 and 2-2-2 in the Horizon League. The Flames are now 5-5-3 and 3-2-1 in League play.
"It was a very positive performance from the lads today," said NKU head coach
Stu Riddle. "I said right at the start that we weren't here to make up the numbers in the League this season. To get our seventh shutout of the year and a draw against the reigning Horizon League champions, shows that we mean business."
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Jim Barkei had a great match in the net for NKU. He made a season-high 10 saves on the afternoon to prevent the Flames from scoring.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Alex Greive had the first shot on goal of the match in the third minute, but his attempt was saved by the UIC goalkeeper.
- Barkei made his first save of the match in the 24th minute.
- In the 25th minute, UIC's Peter Becht had a clear chance to score, but Barkei made a diving save.
- Becht had another chance in the 31st minute. However, Barkei was once again able to make the save.
- An offside call in the 38th minute negated a UIC goal.
- Rikard Lindqvist took a long free kick in the 43rd minute, and he forced the UIC goalkeeper to make a save.
- Barkei recorded his final save of the first half in the 44th minute on a shot by Max Todd.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- In the 59th minute, Becht fired a shot for UIC that nearly went in, but Barkei was able to make a diving save to his right at the goal line to keep him from scoring.
- Moments later, UIC's Lyes Ghezali forced Barkei to make another save.
- UIC's Todd hit the left post in the 65th minute.
- Lindqvist had a nice attempt in the 71st minute, but his shot was blocked by the UIC defense.
- Oscar Gonzalez took a hard shot for UIC in the 75th minute, but Barkei punched the ball away from the goal for a corner kick.
- In the 82nd minute, Barkei made save with his left hand on the near post to keep Jesus Perez from scoring.
OVERTIME SUMMARY
- UIC's Gonzalez nearly scored in the 93rd minute, but his attempt rattled off of the post.
- Barkei made a save with his foot near the end of the first overtime period to keep the score at 0-0.
- Harvey Moyes almost recorded the game-winner in the 109th minute, but his volley attempt ricocheted off of the crossbar.
MATCH NOTES
- UIC had a 22-17 shot advantage. The Flames also had 11 shots on goal, compared to two for NKU.
- Barkei's 10 saves were a season high.
- The Norse recorded their seventh shutout of the season, which is the most in the Division I era of the program.
- UIC was the 2016 Horizon League Tournament champion.
