DETROIT – The Northern Kentucky men's soccer team went on the road Saturday afternoon and picked up a 1-0 win at Detroit Mercy. With the win, NKU improves to 7-4-4 overall and 3-3-2 in the Horizon League. The Titans fall to 6-7-1 and 3-4-1 in League play.
"I'm absolutely elated with the result and performance today," said NKU head coach
Stu Riddle. "We've picked up an important Horizon League win on the road, collected our eighth shutout of the year, and secured a winning record for the season, which is just terrific. We're in top form and in good spirits heading down the final stretch, and the matches can't come quick enough."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
- Brett Wilson scored his second goal of the season in the 24th minute of the match. Alex Greive played a ball across the box from the right side, and Wilson one-timed the ball past the Detroit Mercy goalkeeper to give NKU a 1-0 lead.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Jim Barkei recorded his eighth shutout of the season. He only had to make one save in the match, and he also did well on crosses that entered the box. His record is now 7-4-4.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Alex Greive took the first shot for the Norse from distance in the third minute. The ball was touched by a Detroit Mercy defender and resulted in a corner kick for NKU.
- The Titans had a couple of header attempts in the early part of the match, but neither were on frame.
- Detroit Mercy's Adam Clauss took a hard shot on the ground in the 15th minute, but the NKU defense blocked the attempt and cleared the ball from danger.
- Brett Wilson put the Norse ahead 1-0 in the 24th minute.
- In the 30th minute, Calvin Murphy nearly put NKU up by two goals. His free kick from just outside of the box smashed off of the crossbar.
- Dalton Amez tried to even the score in the 43rd minute. A foul by NKU resulted in a Detroit Mercy free kick. Amez took a shot, and it ricocheted off of the crossbar.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- The first shot of the second half came from Detroit Mercy's Kyle Bandyk, but the NKU defense blocked the attempt to keep it from getting close to the goal.
- NKU earned a corner kick in the 56th minute. Harvey Moyes was able to get a head on the ball, but his shot went to the right of the frame.
- In the 69th minute, Detroit Mercy's Max Becker attempted a shot from well outside the box, and it went over the crossbar for a goal kick.
- Moyes took a long shot in the 72nd minute, but Robbie Blackwell was able to make a save for the Titans.
- Just over a minute later, Tom Suchecki fired a shot, but his attempt was high of the mark.
- Detroit Mercy's Tyler Moorman attempted a diving header in the 80th minute, but it went wide left.
- Barkei recorded his first and only save of the match in the 88th minute on a shot by Clauss.
- The Titans had one final opportunity on a corner kick to try and get the equalizer, but the ball sailed out of bounds.
MATCH NOTES
- Wilson's goal was his second of the season.
- Barkei and the Norse defense recorded their eighth shutout of the year, which are the most for the program in the Division I era.
- The win gives NKU its first road victory of 2017.
