@NKUNorseSB hangs tough against No. 17/16 Kentucky, falls 2-1

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky softball took on the No. 17/16 Wildcats of Kentucky, leading UK through four innings before runs in the fifth and seventh allowed the Cats to claim a 2-1 win. With the setback, NKU drops to 6-20 overall while UK advances to 23-6.

At the Plate
  • UK barely out-hit the Norse, 6-5.
  • Freshman centerfielder Ava Lawson came up huge for the Norse both at the plate and defensively. Lawson went 2-for-3 at the dish, including a double to left field that drove in NKU's lone run.
  • Sydney Ferrante, Paige McQueen and Kailey Rossiter also registered a hit apiece.

In the Circle
  • Senior Charlie Nolen pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and walking two while also striking out two batters. Nolen drops to 2-4 on the season.

Key Moments
  • NKU kept the Wildcats scoreless for the first four innings, allowing just one hit in that span.
  • Zahrya McFarland reached base on a fielder's choice in the second inning and stole second to get in scoring position before Lawson doubled to left field to drive her home.
  • Kentucky was able to knot the score at one run apiece courtesy of a sacrifice fly that sent a runner on third across the plate.
  • The Norse had a defensive showing in the sixth, with Lawson diving for the out in center field before NKU closed the frame on a double play through Taylor Brummell at second base.
  • Kentucky scored once more in the seventh off an RBI double. The Norse were able to get Lawson on third in the bottom of the frame, but could not manage to tie up the contest as the Wildcats took the 2-1 win.

Norse Notes
  • With her pair of hits on the afternoon, Lawson recorded her seventh multi-hit game of the season. That number trails Paige McQueen's leading count by just one game. She also extended her current hitting streak to three games, tying her season best.
  • McQueen extended her hitting streak to five games and her reached base streak to six, both of which lead the team.
  • NKU played in front of a crowd of 325 fans.
  • The game was a marked improvement from just a season ago against the Wildcats, when the Norse were subject to a no-hitter in a five-inning, 9-0 setback.

Up Next
  • The Norse hit the road to continue Horizon League play, traveling to Rochester, Michigan, to take on Oakland. The series will begin on Friday, March 31 with a single game at 3 p.m. before wrapping up the road trip with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 1.
