@NKUNorseSB takes UIC to 12 innings, falls 1-0

CHICAGO – Northern Kentucky softball the top team in the Horizon League to 12 innings but ultimately fell to the Flames, 1-0. With the setback, NKU dips to 11-27 overall and 5-8 in League play while UIC moves on to 25-17 (12-1 HL).

At the Plate

In the Circle
  • Senior Charlie Nolen pitched the full game, walking just one batter throughout 11.2 innings of work. The Flames recorded 10 hits, but were held to just the game-ending run against Nolen, who drops to 5-8 on the season.

Key Moments
  • UIC's Elaine Heflin, the reigning HL Pitcher of the Year, proved to be a nuisance in the circle as the Norse were unable to record a hit until the 11th inning. However, NKU's defensive effort kept the Flames from scoring in seven innings and continued to push extra frames.
  • Ferrante spoiled Heflin's bid for a no-hitter with a single to center field, after which Heflin was pulled from the rotation, but the Norse were unable to move Ferrante further along the base path.
  • Ava Lawson advanced on a fielder's choice and stole second, but was left on base at the end of the 12th inning.
  • UIC used a single to left field followed by a double through the left side to get runners on second and third. A single to left field provided the final blow as the Flames were able to plate a run and take the series opener.

Up Next
  • The series with the Flames concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader, set for a noon CT/1 p.m. ET first pitch from Chicago.
