Phoenix claim series opener, game two suspended due to lightning

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky softball dropped its series opener to Green Bay, 5-1 in eight innings, before the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was halted due to lightning. NKU drops to 13-34 overall and 7-12 in Horizon League Play, while Green Bay advances to 3-28 (2-15 HL).
 
At the Plate
  • Green Bay out-hit the Norse, 11-8.
  • The freshmen outfielders shone for NKU with multi-hit games. Centerfielder Ava Lawson led the way with a 3-for-4 showing, while Isabell Alexander went 2-for-3 and scored NKU's lone run and Kailey Rossiter had a 2-for-4 showing.
  • Junior third baseman Sydney Ferrante also recorded a hit in the contest.
 
In the Circle
  • Junior Ashlynn Roberts threw all eight innings for NKU, striking out three batters while walking three. She dips to 4-14 on the season.
 
Key Moments
  • Green Bay was the first to score, with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning.
  • NKU knotted the score in the sixth, with Alexander doubling through the right side before she advanced to third off a bunt from Rossiter. An error on the throw as Rossiter stole second allowed Alexander to cross the plate for the Norse.
  • Green Bay used an offensive burst in the extra inning to plate four runs. The Phoenix used a trio of RBI singles to swing the advantage in their favor, the latter of which drove in two runs for Green Bay.

  • NKU began its scheduled second game of the doubleheader after a brief lightning delay. Green Bay took a 3-1 lead before the game was halted due to another bout of lightning at the top of the fourth inning. The game will resume tomorrow at noon, followed by the series finale, which is scheduled to air on the ESPN3 platform.
