@NKUNorseMSOC beats Detroit Mercy 6-2

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team defeated Detroit Mercy on Saturday night by a final score of 6-2. The Norse improve its record to 9-4 in overall play and 2-3 in the Horizon League.
 
Riddle's Remarks
"It was a very important and good win for us tonight in Horizon League play," said NKU head coach Stu Riddle. "Things clicked for us from an attacking perspective and we scored six very good goals. There is plenty to continue to work on as we look forward to the final stretch of the regular season."
 
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
  • Greive opened up the game early for the Norse in the second minute with a brilliant goal. Greive collected a loose ball, dribbled out to the right wing and sent a shot far post from 25 yards out.
  • The Norse took a 2-0 lead over the Titans after Lindqvist added a goal of his own in the 23rd minute. Lindqvist had plenty of space in the field, brought the ball up to the 18-yard box, and made a cut back to the middle where he fired the shot.
  • Kooistra played a vital role in getting the Norse a penalty kick as he crossed the ball to Willis in the box. Willis collected the pass and was fouled before completing the penalty kick effortlessly resulting in the 3-0 lead going into the half.
  • Greive scored the first goal of the second half in the 66th minute, earning himself a brace for the night. Probert sent a cross into the box for Greive who then ricocheted the ball off a Detroit Mercy defender and ultimately resulted in the goal.
  • Willis heads another goal home for the Norse in the 71st minute off an assist from Hunt. Probert was also credited with an assist on the play as he played the ball to Hunt.
  • Komolong slid it low past the goalie for the final goal of the night in the 76th minute to take the 6-2 lead over the Titans. Willis had the assist on the play as he headed the ball in front of Komolong.

  • Barkei played the entire match, recording 3 saves on the night.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Greive took the first shot of the match in the second minute and was successful as his shot from 25 yards out connected with the net.
  • Lindqvist added the second goal of the night as he dribbled to the top-center of the box and found space to score.
  • Willis added a goal of his own in the 32nd minute as he drew a foul in the box. He completed the penalty kick with ease.
  • The Norse recorded 10 shots.
  • Goalkeeper Barkei had a quiet first half with one save on five attempts from the Titans.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Lindvist was given a yellow card in the 55th minute.
  • Willis gave the Norse a 4-0 lead in the 65th minute. Probert had the assist.
  • Detroit Mercy immediately answered and scored its first goal of the match in the 66th minute.
  • Willis added another goal for the Norse in the 71st minute to make the score 5-1.
  • The Titans again had an answer shortly after Willis' goal, as they cut the lead to three goals for the Norse.
  • Komolong then added to the frenzy of second half goals in the 76th minute to record the sixth and final goal of the game.
  • Barkei recorded two saves.
 
MATCH NOTES
  • NKU had a 15-12 shot advantage in the match.
  • NKU was not called offsides the entire match.
  • UDM recorded six corner kicks, compared to two for the Norse.
  • The Norse improve to 5-2 at NKU Soccer Stadium.

  • The Norse travel to IUPUI on Sunday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
