@NKUNorseBSB splits Sunday doubleheader with ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team split a doubleheader with East Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon. ETSU defeated the Norse 7-2 in the first game of the doubleheader, which was a seven-inning contest. The Norse came back to win the second part of the doubleheader by a score of 5-4 in a full nine-inning game. ETSU is 2-1 to begin the year, while NKU is 1-2.
 
GAME 1 – ETSU 7, NKU 2 (seven innings)
 
AT THE PLATE ON THE MOUND
  • Pat Kelley earned the start on the mound for the Norse, and he pitched the first three innings.
  • Jordan Menfee came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning, and he pitched two innings.
  • Chris Barber made his debut for the Norse in the sixth inning. Joe Martin also pitched in the sixth inning.
KEY MOMENTS
  • Richmond led off the game with a solo home run to left field to put the Norse ahead 1-0.
  • ETSU scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Chris Cook's double brought home Ben Jackson and Sean Kearney.
  • Will Haueter's single in the top of the third inning allowed Richmond to score to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third. Richmond was hit by a pitch, moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Rattai, and reached third base on a wild pitch in the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, ETSU's Christian Bailey singled to start the inning. Caleb Longley then stepped up to the plate and hit a home run to right center to give ETSU a 4-2 lead.
  • ETSU scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bailey's double to right center allowed three runners to score to give the Bucs a 7-2 lead.
NORSE NOTES
  • ETSU stranded eight runners on base, while NKU stranded seven.
  • Neither team had an error in the field.
  • The Bucs had 10 hits in the contest, compared to five for the Norse.
 

GAME TWO – NKU 5, ETSU 4
AT THE PLATE
  • Will Haueter was 4-for-5 in the game with a RBI and a double.
  • Mike Moffatt went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
  • Brendan Alas had a 2-for-4 showing at the plate with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.
  • Collin Hohman went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored.
  • Andrew Bacon was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams got the starting nod for NKU, and he struck out five batters in three innings of work.
  • Brody Basilone (W, 1-0) came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning. He allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings to earn the win on the mound.
  • Cameron Ross went out to the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning. He struck out three batters, while allowing just one run, and he picked up his first save of the season.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Norse started the scoring in the second inning of the game. Dominic Mercurio and Moffatt both singled in the inning to put runners on first and second. With one out, Bacon singled to load the bases. Mercurio then scored on a wild pitch to give NKU a 1-0 lead.
  • ETSU's Jackson Greer hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead.
  • NKU tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. Bacon singled to left field, and advanced to second base on a balk. Hohman then stepped up to the plate and delivered a double down the left field line to score Bacon. Hohman moved to third when Cole Heavilin reach on an error, and Hohman crossed the plate on Haueter's single to right field to make the score 3-3.
  • The Norse took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Moffatt hit a triple in the inning and he came home on Alas' double down the left field line.
  • Alas hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to extend the Norse lead to 5-3.
  • ETSU got a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Bucs' Cook was hit by a pitch in the inning, moved to third on a double by Aaron Maher, and scored on a wild pitch to get ETSU to within one at 5-4.
  • Ross retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 5-4 victory for NKU.
NORSE NOTES
  • Hohman and Bacon both made their collegiate debuts in the game.
  • Williams made his first start in an NKU uniform.
  • NKU outhit ETSU 15-5 in the game.
  • The Norse stranded 14 baserunners in the game.
  • NKU didn't commit an error in the field, while ETSU had one.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Norse will travel to Louisiana Monroe next week for a four-game series. The series will begin on Friday, Feb. 23 with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
