Offense shines in @NKUNorseBSB’s 14-6 win over EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team defeated Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday night by a final score of 14-6. The Norse improve to 8-21 on the year, while EKU falls to 16-18.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Will Haueter was 4-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Chad Roberts went 3-for-6 with a homer, three RBIs, and three runs scored.
  • Preston Pilat was 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Collin Hohman also went 2-for-5 in the contest. He finished with a RBI and two runs scored.
  • Griffin Doersching was 1-for-4 with a grand slam.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Jordan Menfee got the start on the mound, and he allowed just one run on three hits in three innings of work.
  • Kyle Service came out of the bullpen and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He earned the win on the mound.
  • Kaleb Meeks made his collegiate debut in the game.
  • Nick Beard and Travis Rowland each pitched an inning to close out the game.  
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Haueter hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put NKU ahead 1-0.
  • EKU tied the game in the bottom of the first. The Colonels' Chris Botsoe hit a RBI single to even the score at 1-1.
  • The Norse scored six runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Richmond hit a RBI single in the frame to score Shane Paradis. Later in the inning, Roberts hit a RBI single, which allowed Collin Hohman to cross the plate. After Haueter walked to load the bases, Doersching stepped up and hit a ball over the left center field wall for a grand slam.
  • NKU added two runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 9-1. Hohman hit a RBI single, allowing Nolan Rattai to score. Hohman crossed the plate later in the inning on a RBI groundout from Roberts.
  • The Colonels scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 9-5. The biggest hit in the frame came from Daniel Harris IV, who hit a double down the left field line which allowed three runners to cross the plate.
  • Roberts hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning for NKU, which gave the Norse a 10-5 lead. Pilat added a two-run homer in the frame to extend the lead to 12-5.
  • EKU got a run back in the bottom half of the eighth. Alex Holderbach's sacrifice fly allowed Cornell Nixon to cross the plate and make the score 12-6.
  • The Norse got two more runs in the ninth inning. Haueter hit a RBI single, which allowed Paradis to score. Later in the inning, Doersching reached on an error, giving Roberts the opportunity to cross the plate to make the score 14-6.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • NKU's victory snapped a four-game winning streak for EKU.
  • The Norse had four home runs in the game.
  • Doersching's grand slam was the first for the team since Richmond accomplished the feat in the team's 8-6 win over No. 6 Kentucky on March 7.
  • The Norse had 16 hits, compared to 10 for the Colonels.
  • EKU stranded 11 runners, and NKU left nine on base.
 
UP NEXT
  • NKU hosts Oakland this weekend for a Horizon League series. The first game of the series takes place on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
