@NKUNorseBSB defeats Oakland, 5-3, in series opener

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Friday afternoon by a final score of 5-3. NKU moves to 11-28 on the year and 6-13 in the Horizon League. Oakland falls to 11-26 and 8-10 in league play.
 
AT THE PLATE  
ON THE MOUND
  • Cameron Ross got the start and earned the win on the mound. He went five innings, allowing just one run.
  • Joe Martin pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and he gave up just two hits.
  • Kyle Service was on the mound for the last two innings, allowing two hits and two runs.
  • Ross, Martin and Service combined to hold Oakland to just 2-of-18 (.111) hitting with runners on base and 1-for-12 (.083) hitting with runners in scoring position.
 
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Doersching hit a two-run homer in the top of the second to give NKU a 2-0 lead.
  • The Norse added another run in the top of the sixth. Andrew Bacon was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Rattai. Haueter then stepped up to the plate and delivered a single up the middle to score Bacon, giving NKU a 3-0 lead.
  • Oakland got a run in the bottom half of the sixth. With two outs and runners on the corners, Mike McGee hit an RBI single to score Myles Zilinsky.
  • The Norse added two runs in the ninth inning to go ahead 5-1. Roberts singled in the inning, and he moved to third on a double by Mercurio. Roberts scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Moffatt, and Mercurio crossed the plate on a single by Paradis.
  • Emerson Misch hit a two-run homer for Oakland in the bottom of the ninth to make the score 5-3.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • Neither team committed an error in the contest.
  • Oakland had 10 hits in the game, and NKU had six.
  • The Golden Grizzlies stranded 11 runners, and the Norse left three on base.
