@NKUNorseSB sweeps Oakland in doubleheader

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky softball picked up its first Horizon League wins on Friday afternoon, downing Oakland in a pair of one-run victories, 5-4 and 6-5. The Norse move to 9-19 overall and 2-3 in league play while the Golden Grizzlies drop to 8-18 (1-7 Horizon).

Game 1: NKU 5, Oakland 4

At the Plate
  • The Norse held a heavy advantage in hits, 16-6.  NKU had at least 15 hits for the first time since March 10, 2018 when the Norse clubbed 15 against Seton Hall.
  • Six different Norse had multi-hit performances. Kailey Rossiter and Jordan Jenkins both went 3-for-4 from the dish, with Rossiter scoring a run.
  • Isabell Alexander was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Ava Lawson was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one driven in, and Josie Frazier went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Both of Lawson's hits were doubles.

In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther pitched a complete game, moving to 6-10 on the season. She struck out three batters and walked one, and had just one earned run against.

Scoring Summary
  • Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as a leadoff double was converted into a run off an RBI single to center field.
  • The Golden Grizzlies plated one more in the third inning as an error allowed one runner to reach home.
  • The Norse were held scoreless until the fourth inning. Rossiter led off the frame with a single to shortstop, and advanced on an error and a stolen base. She and Kara Meter were driven in off a single to right field from Alexander, and Alexander was driven in off an RBI groundout by Toree Stalter to give the Norse a 3-1 edge.
  • Oakland took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with two runners taking advantage of a second Norse miscue.
  • NKU scored the winning runs in the top of the sixth inning. Frazier singled to shortstop and advanced on a sac bunt by Stalter. Lawson later doubled to center field to send Frazier across the plate, and Madi Mulder singled to left field to score Lawson.

Game 2: NKU 6, Oakland 5

At the Plate
  • Both teams recorded nine hits in the contest.
  • Lawson and Kit Rocco went 2-for-4 from the plate, with Lawson scoring two runs while Rocco had one. Lawson also added an RBI.
  • Josie Frazier was 2-for-4 with one run scored.

  • Hailey Whitmer picked up her second career win in 3.0 innings of work, fanning one batter and walking none while allowing just one run.

Scoring Summary
  • McFarland swung on her first pitch of the game and sent it flying over left field to give the Norse an early lead in the opening frame. Lawson was then walked before being driven in off a Mulder single to left center to put the Norse up 2-0.
  • Oakland scored a run in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single to right center.
  • The Golden Grizzlies tied the game with a sac fly to center field in the bottom of the fourth, and took the lead on the next at-bat as a triple scored a pair of runners for the 4-2 edge.
  • Oakland added a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to extend out to a 5-2 lead.
  • NKU sent four across the plate in the top of the seventh to claim the victory. Frazier led off with a single through the left side and was driven in by Lawson. Rocco reached base by being hit by a pitch, and Hoover stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a game-winning three-run shot over center field.
  • The Norse used their momentum to make quick work of the Golden Grizzlies in the bottom of the frame, retiring Oakland in order on just five pitches.
