@NKUNorseSB upsets UIC in series opener, 4-2

CHICAGO – Northern Kentucky softball had a strong start in its series against the reigning Horizon League champion UIC, upsetting the Flames in a 4-2 decision. The Norse move to 14-23 overall and 7-5 in league play after defeating UIC for just the second time in program history, while the Flames fall to 20-20 (10-3 Horizon).

At the Plate
  • UIC barely edged the Norse in hits, 7-6.
  • Ava Lawson recorded the only multi-hit game for NKU, going 2-for-2 with a run driven in and a run scored.
  • Madi Mulder was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Kit Rocco added an RBI off a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.

In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther pitched the complete game, moving to 9-10 this season with the victory. Ginther is now one win away from tying Ashlynn Roberts' Division I-era record of 19 career victories. The junior hurler struck out five batters and walked one in the contest.

Scoring Summary
  • The Norse used a hot first inning to plate all the runs they needed for the victory, scoring three runs on four hits. Josie Frazier led off with a single up the middle and was advanced by Lawson's single to the shortstop. Taylor Hoover reached base on a fielder's choice that had Frazier out on the play, which was followed by a two-run double from Mulder that sent Lawson and Hoover across the plate. Rocco delivered a single to second base on the next at-bat, driving in Mulder.
  • NKU added an insurance run in the top of the fifth as Lawson singled through the right side to score Frazier.
  • UIC was held hitless for the first two innings and did not score until the bottom of the sixth, when a two-run homer prevented an NKU shutout.
  • Ginther struck out a pair of batters in the final frame to help seal the win.

Up Next
  • The Norse are back in action tomorrow against the Flames for the remainder of the series. A doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT/2 ET and both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
