@NKUNorseBSB falls to Flames in regular-season finale

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky baseball suffered a 20-4 setback to UIC in the final game of the regular season, dropping to 14-40 overall and 12-18 in Horizon League play. The Flames clinched the series and move to 26-21 (18-11 Horizon).
 
At the Plate
  • Will Haueter and Andrew Bacon both had multi-hit games for the Norse, each clubbing two hits. Haueter drove in two runs and scored one of his own off a home run in the fourth inning.
  • Billy Marion also had a pair of RBI, scoring Bacon and Brennan Alas in the third inning.
 
On the Mound
  • Proctor Mercer (2-6) absorbed the loss after tossing the first 2.0 innings of the contest. Mercer struck out one and walked four, allowing six runs on five hits.
  • Gunnar Barnard added 1.1 innings of work with one strikeout and two issued walks.
  • Tyler Murphy tossed 2.2 innings for the Norse, and Alas added 2.0 innings on the mound.
  • Cole Heavilin finished out the contest on his senior day and did not allow a run while also striking out a batter in his first collegiate appearance on the mound.
 
Key Moments
  • UIC scored in the opening inning as its top hitting tandem of Scott Ota and Ryan Hampe clubbed a double and a single, respectively, the latter of which drove in the opening run.
  • The Flames added four more runs in the second, loading the bases before scoring on a two-run single, another RBI single and a sac fly.
  • In the third, UIC scored on a wild pitch to add another run.
  • NKU loaded the bases following a double by Bacon and a pair of walks drawn by Alas and Brennan Gick. Marion delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field to open up scoring for the Norse as Bacon and Alas made their way home.
  • UIC answered back by loading and then immediately clearing the bases off a double by Sean Dee. The Flames added two more runs off RBI singles before a three-run homer to left field brought UIC's count to 14 runs.
  • Haueter delivered his second home run of the series in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run shot to left field.
  • The Flames used two home runs and an RBI single in the sixth, an RBI double in the seventh and an eighth-inning fielder's choice to extend out to a 20-4 lead.
 
 
Game Notes
  • Haueter takes over sole possession of ninth on NKU's all-time RBI list with his 125th and 126th runs driven in.

  • The Norse head to Dayton, Ohio, for the 2019 Horizon League Baseball Championship on Wednesday-Saturday, May 22-25. The Norse have earned the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed Oakland in the first game of the tournament at noon on Wednesday. The winner will advance to take on No. 1 Wright State at 11 a.m. on Thursday. All of the games of the Horizon League Championship will be broadcast on ESPN+.
