@NKUNorseMSOC falls to Cleveland State in overtime, 2-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Northern Kentucky men's soccer team lost its second-straight game, falling to Cleveland State, 2-1, in overtime at Krenzler Field.

"Right now we unfortunately keep shooting ourselves in the foot with the same type of errors at the same time of games that ultimately cost us a result," said head coach Stu Riddle. "There are plenty of points left to play for and we have to get focused for our next opponent."

NKU SCORING SUMMARY

  • Gianni Bouzoukis netted his first goal of the season in the 60th minute. Sam Nwosu had the assist.

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Baj Maan made 5 saves, faced 19 shots and allowed both of Cleveland State's goals.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • Cleveland State put together a strong showing on offense to begin the game, putting together six shots in the first 18 minutes of the match. Only one of those, by Lawrence Kareph, reached the goal, where Baj Maan took control at the bottom-left corner of the net.
  • Past the 30-minute mark, the Norse reached the final third of the field at a much higher rate as Alex Greive found opportunities for a few shots.
  • The Norse spent much of the later minutes in the first half making substitutions to find a flow on offense, bringing in Brodie Sallows, Ali Zohar, Ryan Godding and Bouzoukis.
  • After both teams appeared stalled in the opening minutes of the second half, the Norse were the first team on the board in the 60th minute. After a Nwosu shot was blocked, Bouzoukis took possession and sent his own shot into the goal.
  • NKU held onto the lead with little opposition until the 86th minute, where a header from Tommy Bielanski slipped by Maan, tying the game up.
  • With neither side having time to set up an effective attack for another goal, the game moved into overtime, which saw little offense for the first five minutes.
  • In the final minutes of the first overtime, Cleveland State dominated possession and scored in the 100th minute with a goal from Gabriel Pewu to win the game.

NORSE NOTES

  • Bouzoukis' goal was his first of the season after leading Marshall in goals scored a year ago.
  • This is NKU's second overtime loss of the year after losing to Niagara in double overtime on September 6.
  • Despite both teams having nearly 20 shots apiece, there were only 10 total shots on goal for the evening.
  • Maan has played every minute at keeper this season.

UP NEXT

  • The Norse will head up to Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday, September 24, to take on the Flyers at 7:00 p.m.
