BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team (0-9, 0-0 HL) fell to Samford (7-1, 0-0 Southern), 5-4, on Friday evening at Griffin Field.
AT THE PLATE
- Treyvin Moss had a monster night for NKU, going a perfect 3-for-3 and generating a pair of walks. The freshman represented two of the Norse runs on the night.
- Jake Murray had another great night at the plate, going 3-for-5.
- Sam Hedges blasted his first home run of the year in the sixth inning.
- Griffin Doersching (1-for-5) and Andrew Bacon (1-for-4) also plated a runner.
- Noah Fisher (1-for-5) and John Odom (1-for-4) also had hits in the contest.
ON THE MOUND
- Jared Flueck had his best start yet in his young tenure with the Norse. The junior tossed for seven innings, allowing four runs, eight hits and a walk. Six batters struck out under his watch.
- Tyler Keith (L, 0-2) threw for the last inning, allowing two hits and the winning run.
KEY MOMENTS
- A leadoff infield single by Moss set the tone for the opening frame. Collin Luty followed by reaching on a fielding error and the bases were full with a bunt single by Murray. Moss scored after a fielding error put Doersching on base and Luty came home through a sac fly from Bacon.
- Samford also had a strong first inning, circling three runs in to take a 3-2 advantage early on.
- The Bulldogs led off the third inning with a double to left field. The runner reached third thanks to a groundout and came home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
- With Flueck eating up innings and keeping things within reach, NKU made it a one-run game after Hedges knocked one deep to left for his first home run of the year.
- Moss reached on a walk to start off the eighth, while a sacrifice bunt by Luty and a fielding error moved the runner to third. To knot up the game, the Norse freshman reached home plate thanks to a passed ball.
- The Norse had the opportunity to take a lead in the eighth after three-consecutive walks loaded the bases with two outs on the board. Luty worked a full count as best he could, but unfortunately struck out to strand the trio.
- With runners on second and third, after a single and a double, respectively, Samford drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly out to centerfield in the eighth to seal the game.
