BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team (0-12, 0-0 HL) lost to Samford (10-1, 0-0 Southern), 10-5, on Sunday afternoon at Griffin Field. Chase Isbell (W, 1-0) gets the win for the Bulldogs and Kyle Service (L, 0-2) is credited with his second loss.
AT THE PLATE
ON THE MOUND
- Service worked the mound for the first six innings, giving up six runs, two walks and eight hits.
- Tyler Keith went two-thirds of an inning, allowing a run off a hit and a couple walks.
- Noah Richardson tossed for a frame and allowed three runs.
- Jake Pease threw the final third-inning, keeping it scoreless.
KEY MOMENTS
- Bacon and Doersching put the Norse in scoring position early in the first with two-consecutive singles. On the following at-bat, Luty was hit by a pitch to load things up. McGee sent a ball deep to right field for a double to score two.
- A single and a wild pitch gave Samford a runner on second in its half of the first. The Bulldogs then played a ball to left field to get on the board.
- Samford took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of extra-base hits and a couple singles.
- NKU trimmed it to a one-run game in the next frame. Doersching led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second with a balk. Luty cleaned up with a single on the next at-bat.
- Gick singled to centerfield to begin the seventh inning and made it to third off of a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Moss drove the outfielder in with a sac fly to center to tie the game up at 4-4.
- Seven batters cycled through the bottom of the seventh to plate three Samford runs, giving the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead.
- Bacon singled again in the eighth and reached second on the same play thanks to a throwing error. The junior then advanced on a passed ball and came home with a sacrifice fly to left from Luty.
- Samford rounded out the game by scoring another three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
