@NKUNorseSB ends weekend with 7-1 win over Creighton

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Northern Kentucky softball used a big second inning to spark a 7-1 win over Creighton to close out the Coach B Classic. NKU moves to 7-6 on the year while the Bluejays drop to 8-8.

  • Taylor Ginther pitched the complete game, moving to 4-2 on the season. The senior hurler struck out four batters and walked a pair.
 
Scoring Summary
  • Toree Stalter led off the first with a single to left field, and she was later driven in by Hoover with a shot to left field.
  • Creighton used three hits to plate its first run in the top of the second to equalize the score.
  • Jordan Jenkins doubled to left field to kick off the bottom half of the inning, with Jenna O'Hair going in to pinch run. NKU got runners on the corners following a single from Tatum Biddle, and the pair was able to score off a McDaniel single to left field, coupled with a fielding error by the left fielder. Lawson then drew a walk, and Whitmer cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left center.
  • The Norse added its seventh run in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Lawson leading off with a double to left center. She was then driven in by Hoover thanks to a single down the left line.
 
  Norse Notes
  • Stalter has reached base in every game this season, either by way of a hit or a walk.
  • Whitmer's home run was her second of the season. NKU has now had three players record at least two home runs on the year.
  • Lawson is one double away from cracking NKU's all-time top-10 list for career doubles. She currently has 33.
  • Both Whitmer and Lawson batted .417 over the weekend, with Lawson slugging 1.000 while Whitmer had a slugging percentage of .750.
  • Ginther posted a 0.88 ERA through three appearances, with a 2-0 record in 16.0 innings pitched.

  • The Norse head to the Sunshine State for its final two tournaments of the preseason, starting with the Hatter Classic on Friday-Sunday, March 6-8. NKU will take on Sacred Heart and host Stetson twice, along with a single game against Fairfield.
