Men’s @NKUNorseTennis completes weekend series against Youngstown State, falling 5-2

CINCINNATI, OH. – The Northern Kentucky men's tennis team slides to 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the Horizon League after falling to Youngstown State, 5-2, on Sunday. The Penguins climb to 12-8 overall on the season and 4-4 in Horizon League play.   

Match Notables     
  • In doubles play, the Penguins claimed the early lead, with No. 3 Laurentiu Mandocescu and Will Everett defeating Nick Elleman and Felipe Hidalgo 6-1. No. 2 Jorge Rodriguez and Trevor Ball picked up the next match over their opponents 6-3, but Andrew Niehaus and Emilien Burnel ultimately fell short in a close matchup against No. 1 Vasilis Vardakis and Erik Gran 7-6. 
  • Three Norse fell in a row to help secure the win for the Penguins, starting off with Brandon Ponomarew (No. 2) falling to his opponent 6-0, 6-2, then Niehaus losing 6-4, 6-2, and finally No. 1 Burnel falling 7-6, 6-3. 
  • Santiago Casamayor (No. 5) earned a point for the Norse, defeating his opponent 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, but Ball (No. 6) followed and fell 4-6, 2-6. 
  • Rodriguez gave the Norse their second point with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0, win at No. 4.
 
The Norse finish second overall in the Horizon League, earning them a spot in the Horizon League Championships. Competition is set for Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2.
